Implant placement
After tooth loss, the jawbone around that tooth slowly disappears due to the lack of function, and this process continues until the end of life. By placing an implant in the bone, this process can be stopped, and the jaws can be restored to their normal function and appearance. Regardless of the reasons for tooth loss, the best solution for replacing a lost tooth is a dental implant.
What is a dental implant?
It is an artificial tooth root made of titanium. It is implanted directly into the bone of the lower or upper jaw under local anesthesia. The surgical intervention itself is painless and short-term, after which sutures are placed and removed in 7-10 days. After the installation of the implant, it is necessary to wait 2-4 months for the osseointegration period to pass (the ingrowth of the implant to the bone), after which the prosthetic part follows.
Who is a candidate for an implant?
All patients, starting from those missing one tooth to patients without a single tooth in the oral cavity. This allows these patients certain comfort and confidence they lack without these implants. Certain patients lack available bone for the implant placement, so it is necessary to perform augmentation of the alveolar ridge (compensation with artificial bone or own bone). The augmentation process itself can be performed during the implant placement to compensate for smaller bone defects, or immediately before the installation of the implant to compensate for larger bone defects.
Implant advantages
By implant placement, we preserve the surrounding healthy teeth, which avoids grinding, and they remain intact as such, which represents the greatest benefit you can do for your teeth’ health. Only implants can provide the speech and chewing function you had before tooth loss. Studies show that the implant success rate after 10 years of function is 95%, while 30% of bridge support teeth are lost in a 7 to 10 years period.
Methods of implant placement
- All-on-four concept (four implants) fixed teeth in one day
- All-on-six concept (six implants)
- Skeleton prostheses stabilized by crossbars
- Sinus lift procedure
- PRF (platelet rich fibrin)
- Implants in the aesthetic zone
